The Mexborough & Swinton Traction Company generally worked a 6-mile square area north of Rotherham which included Rawmarsh, Swinton, Mexborough and Conisbrough. The area was diverse, with open green fields, industrial and colliery sites, and a massive steelworks. The M & S buses served and connected this densely populated area with a wide variation of bus headways, making for interesting bus histories.
In Mexborough & Swinton – The Motor Buses the author, Stuart Emmett, concentrates on the M & S motor buses and coaches, though he also deals with trolleybuses. Three tables are used to show the early motor bus routes, routes in 1961 and routes in 1969. On 1 October 1969, not long after the formation of the National Bus Company, M & S became part of Yorkshire Traction. A section entitled ‘The Fleet in Pictures’ displays a variety of illustrations, all of which are captioned.
