An interesting collection of archive black & white photographs featuring some of the steam locomotives that are now in preservation, during their earlier working lives before they were withdrawn from service by British Railways.
A brief history accompanies every illustrated locomotive, giving details of their service lives, how they subsequently came to be preserved, their current location and status, and any plans for the future. Locomotives in the National Collection and those with private owners are both featured.
British Steam Locomotives Before Preservation: A Study of Before and Afterlife is divided into five main chapters, one for each of the locomotives of the `Big Four’ railway companies, and a fifth chapter covering British Railways’ locomotives.
A final chapter contains a list of all former main line steam locomotives that are now in preservation with location details. The locomotives illustrated in the book are marked. 168 pages. Hardback.
