Class 86 was a standard tank loco built for the Deutsche Reichsbahn between 1928 and 1943. A total of 776 locos were built, mainly for freight traffic on branch lines but the class also saw use on passenger trains.
After World War II the class could be found in both West and East Germany until the last examples were withdrawn in 1974 and 1988 respectively. A number of examples were also built for Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland.
The book tells the story of their introduction and operations throughout their working lives, including full fleet lists for each of the depots where they were allocated. At the back there is a chapter on the preserved Class 86s with details of their workings in preservation for each year from 1972 to 2023. This chapter has colour illustrations, with most of the rest of the photos being black & white.
