A detailed history of the Class 50.40 steam locomotives, which were built between the late 1950s and 1967, when the final class member rolled off the production line. 50.4088 was actually the last steam locomotive built in the DDR in April 1967.

The class remained in service for around 20 years and were some of the last freight steam locomotives operating in Germany towards the end of their working lives. The move towards diesel and electric power led to the locomotives all being withdrawn before the end of the 1970s. The class mainly operated on freight trains in the north of Germany, with notable depots for the class being Griefswald, Stralsund, Templin and Rostock among others.

The book looks at all aspects of the locomotives’ design, construction and operation, including many illustrations, diagrams and tabulated information. A detailed account of an important locomotive in German railway history. German text. Hardback. 192 pages.
