The Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) has been one of the major shipping companies operating between Britain and both Ireland and mainland Europe for almost 200 years.

This book describes the company’s operations between the 1960s and the 2010s, covering the routes operated, vessels used, and P&O’s acquisitions including that of operator Townsend Thoresen’s holding company European Ferries in 1987 which coincided with the capsizing of the “Herald of Free Enterprise” at Zeebrugge and the resulting loss of 193 lives.

The book is divided into chapters covering the western and eastern English Channel, Irish Sea, North Sea, Scottish isles and New Zealand operations along with the short-lived jetfoil services between London and Belgium via the Thames estuary. At the back there is a fleet list including all vessels that were operated by P&O during the period covered.

Well illustrated with colour photos throughout. Hardback. 264 pages.
