Following deregulation in 1986, the established bus operators in Leeds suddenly found themselves being challenged by new independent operators. Whilst the majority of these new operators ultimately disappeared from the scene, and others were swallowed up by the larger groups, there were a few which carried on into the 2000s. Since 2000 there have been some new independent operators on the scene, however the key operators in the city are still Firstbus, Arriva and Transdev.
In Leeds Buses Since 2000 the author, Keith A. Jenkinson, takes a look at all the transport developments and changes that have taken place in Leeds between 1986 and 2022. In 1995 the city welcomed its first guided busway, for the sole use of First Leeds, followed in 2001 by a second which is jointly used by First Leeds and Arriva Yorkshire. In between, in 1999, there was the advent of the bendibuses. Many new liveries and vehicle types are illustrated here, using rare and previously unpublished photographs which showcase the city's bus scene since deregulation.
