An illustrated review of narrow gauge railways around the world. The author, James Waite, has travelled extensively to visit narrow gauge railways in every corner of every continent, taking high quality colour photographs along the way. This book contains a selection of some of his best material.
Narrow Gauge Panorama: Steaming Along the Rustic and Narrow is presented as a journey through 48 different countries, starting in Alaska and finishing in New Zealand. It takes in an immense variety of rolling stock and operations, from huge Garratt locomotives in Kenya and South Africa, to diminutive 0-4-0s barely larger than a miniature railway locomotive.
The book is full of attractive and rarely seen photos, most of which feature steam locomotives at work. Some of the images depict commercial railways in their last days of everyday use, while others show thriving heritage operations which create scenes from the past to great effect.
Detailed captions contain extensive information about each photograph and often background information about the line or location. Most of the photographs are presented in one-per-page format, and an extensive list of locomotive and rolling stock builders is also included. Hardback. 296 pages.
