Opened in 1725, originally as a wagonway to carry coal from the North Durham coalfields to the River Tyne, since the early 1970s Tanfield Railway has operated as a heritage railway. Run by the Tanfield Railway Trust, preservation started with the Marley Hill engine shed, which the Bowes Railway had previously operated, and a stretch of line between Sunniside and East Tanfield, since then the line has been progressively extended. 2025 marks the 300th anniversary of the Tanfield Railway in County Durham and Tanfield Railway in Colour: the Preservation Years celebrates the dedication of the volunteers who are involved with the line. The photographs are all taken by the authors, Henry Elliott and Dave Hewitt, who have produced a splendid selection of eye-catching pictures, and proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the railway.

In Tanfield Railway in Colour: the Preservation Years a map showing Tanfield Railway is followed by a series of chapters, each covering a station or section of the route. The chapters begin with a short introduction, then feature photographs taken from the 1990s to the present day, covering passenger trains, demonstration freight trains and the popular North Pole Express. At the back an appendix lists the locomotives featured in the book.

Well illustrated throughout. 180 colour photographs. 96 pages.
