An updated edition of Hugh Longworth's comprehensive reference work covering all Mark 1 and Mark 2 coaching stock vehicles. It lists all individual coaches and gives a record of their use from 1951 onwards. The Mark 1s and Mark 2s represented British Railways' earliest two generations of standard design coaching stock, with Mark 1s first appearing in 1951, following the by earliest Mark 2 stock in 1964.

For each type of coach, a table of basic information is provided, along with an interior and exterior diagram. Each coach is then listed below with details such as introduction to service, withdrawal date, scrapping date and renumbering provided for each vehicle. Also includes details of departmental vehicles and coaching stock converted to Carflat wagons.
