A reprint of the Ian Allan Publishing abc Combined Volume for Winter 1964. This famous series contained lists of numbers of all the locomotives in service at time of publication and gave rise to the phenomenon of `loco-spotting’ in the 1940s.
This volume covers a period where serious inroads were being made into the fleets of every class of steam locomotive that remained in service as the progress towards diesel and electric power continued at a relentless pace. By late 1964, iconic classes such as the "King" class had already ceased operation and many more were to follow over the following years when essential repairs became due.
