By John Ryan. A collection of over 400 high quality images recalling all aspects of the London & North Eastern Railway, one of the 'Big Four’ railway companies that operated Britain’s railways between 1923 and 1947. This period is often regarded as the heyday of the railways, when competition between the LNER and its rival the LMS led to great technological advances in steam motive power and the development of premium luxury on-board services.
Approximately half of the book is devoted to the LNER locomotive fleet, with many different designs illustrated, captured in a range of settings and performing a variety of duties. The staff responsible for preparing, maintaining, driving and firing the steam locomotives are also featured. This is followed by a section devoted to LNER coaching stock, with interior and exterior views of many different carriages including first class, third class, open carriages, sleepers, mail carriages. restaurants and other miscellaneous vehicles.
Finally, a smaller section reviews freight wagons, maintenance vehicles and ancillary equipment including road vehicles operated by the LNER. Features a remarkable and eclectic collection of designs.
The vast majority of images are in black & white but some colour material is included. All images are accompanied by informative captions. 256 pages. Hardback.
