First published in 1998, this is a 2025 reprint of a comprehensive guide to driving and firing a steam loco.
The first chapter describes all the components of a loco, and the book then sets out the fireman’s and the driver’s duties before, during and after the train’s journey including tasks such as cleaning a loco, checking the firebox, coupling the loco to a train, firing techniques, footplate controls and basic railway signalling.
The book contains many detailed diagrams and close-up views, and at the back there is a glossary of technical terms. Recommended reading for all existing and aspiring heritage railway footplate crews.
The Engine Driver's Manual is the definitive book on driving and maintaining steam locomotives. Hardback. 192 pages.
