In this, the fourth volume of Reverend Canon Brian Arman’s account of the broad gauge motive power of the Great Western Railway, he covers the period from 1852 to 1874.

This volume takes a detailed look at the three passenger and two goods loco classes designed by GWR Locomotive Superintendent Daniel Gooch up until his resignation in 1864 and those of his successor Joseph Armstrong.

There is also a short biography of Mr Armstrong and a chapter on his role in the development of Swindon Works, the Railway Village built to house its workers, and other associated social institutions such as schools, churches and hospitals built to cater for the needs of workers and their families.

Towards the end there is a chapter on the Vale of Neath Railway, a broad gauge mineral railway built to transport coal from the collieries around Neath and Aberdare. There is also an appendix describing the transition from coke to coal as fuel for steam locos, and a select glossary of loco terminology.
