Branch Lines around Preston and Lancaster: Featuring Fishergate Hill (Goods), Preston Dock including the Ribble Steam Railway, Longridge, Whittingham Hospital, Knott End, Lancaster Old Goods Line, Glasson Dock, St. George’s Quay and Lancaster Power Station Branches is part of the Branch Lines series by Middleton Press. As well as detailing all the branch lines the author, Roy Davies, also covers details of local history.
Apart from what remains of the former Preston Dock railway network that serves the Total bitumen terminal and Ribble Steam Railway and Museum, all the branch lines covered in this album were closed and lifted long ago. There are traces of the Longridge branch at Maudland Bridge through the abandoned Miley Tunnel and in open fields occasional traces of earth works relating to the former branch to Knott End can be seen. The bridge that carried the Lancaster power station branch over Water Street is still in place, but much of the trackbed of the Glasson Dock branch is now part of the Lancashire Coastal Way and Bay Cycleway.
The photographs are accompanied by detailed captions and the book is enhanced by the addition of maps, track plans, ticket examples and other ephemera.
